Multi-Layered Cranes

The story begins with the shifting of business premises to its current location of Rotomatik (S)’s customer, Boon Meng Equipment Rental PL. While relocating has its challenges, it brings along the merit of the expansion ability and capacity.

With the support of Rotomatik (S), eight units (1x16T, 4×12.5T & 3x10T) were load tested in October 2023 and handed over to the user.

The user is a leading supplier and in the rental business of generators.

Boon Meng was referred to contact us. It had a Stahl hoist years ago and decided to source for a system of lifting equipment to mechanised their processes.

Despite the referral, the management was prudent and did a thorough research targeting firms supplying crane systems. The owner was very coherent with its requirements and demanded the assurance that the systems will be support their business.

The crane system is tailored such that equipment and parts are swiftly and easily hoisted to/from the upper levels and what ensued are storage optimisation and maximum space utilisation.

With a short turnaround time, the Rotomatik (S) team managed to install the crane system within a tight schedule.

Rotomatik on the Green Journey with SAF

As reported in the Pioneer Magazine, our Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has completed its first net positive energy hangar. As mentioned by Minister for Defence Dr Ng Hen Eng Hensaid that the A330 Multi-role Tanker Transport Hangar is one of MINDEF’s green initiatives to combat against climate change.

Rotomatik (S) which supplied, installed and commissioned the overhead crane is privileged to be selected to be part of the sustainability drive in SAF.

Our contribution to the green drive is the usage of inverter control system which uses less energy than conventional motors. The design of the single crane is such that it is able to traverse the entire hangar which under normal circumstances would require two cranes, furthering the energy consumption reduction.

Aurastone Pte Ltd – A Key Supplier of Kitchen Counter Tops

Kitchens. The bastion of chefs, cooks, fathers and mothers . This is the place where our gastronomical memories are formed and forged. And a kitchen is incomplete without the ubiquitous table top. Table tops have evolved from the simple to the most durable.

Aurastone Pte Ltd is a key supplier of quartz stone and marble in the Singapore market for the making of kitchen counter tops and surfaces.

Rotomatik is pleased to be part of the Singapore table top supply chain. But first, we needed to understand the customer’s requirements.

There are 2 areas of where Rotomatik cranes are used:

Cutting Zone

A 3-tonne single girder crane equipped with a tough ST3 chain hoist is installed in this area where cutting and shaping of the raw materials take place. The cutting processes generates dust particles which may stick onto greased wire ropes. The accumulation of these particulates mixed with grease often causes jams and damages key components of the hoists such as wire rope guide. Hence, chain hoists are used in such environment.

Storage Zone

A 5-tonne crane with a robust SH4 wire rope hoist is installed in this area. It us mainly used for storage, inbound and outbound handling and minor cuttings, if required.

The 2 cranes were installed and commissioned in 2018 and 2021.

Aurastone Pte Ltd has been our customer for a number of years and our task is really about serving and providing our professional advice to the client even before the owner started his company. Most important to Rotomatik is the fact that we believe in the swift execution and timely delivery to facilitate the smooth operations of our customers.

To all the chefs, cooks, fathers and mothers, happy cooking!

The Portability & Sustainability of Rotomatik Slewing Jibs

The current market conditions provide the impetus for manufacturing facilities to adapt quickly. Only recently, overhead cranes seem to be the popular answer to lifting solutions. Another emerging trend is the rethinking of the utilisation of slewing jibs. While overhead cranes offer 3-dimensional material handling, versatility as well as wider area overage, not all lifting applications require overhead cranes. The one outstanding salient characteristic of slewing jibs is they are much more portable vis-à-vis overhead cranes. The relocation process of the latter is longer leading to increased downtime exacerbating operations and eventually supply chains disruptions.

Slewing jibs are relatively much easier to dismantle, relocate and install without any major disruption to the shop floor and more importantly, manufacturing downtime is drastically reduced as opposed to overhead cranes.

Our key customer Praxair Surfaces Technologies Pte Ltd which provides coating services on components, mainly for oil and gas industries and aviation, needed to relocate their 6 units of Jib cranes from their former premises in Tuas to the new location in Changi. The project included the de-installing, cleaning, load testing and re-installing.

No parts were replaced during the process, demonstrating the durability of Rotomatik jib cranes. What Rotomatik did was to thoroughly clean the jib structures and components and repainted the jibs. We believe in saving the environment and costs by adopting the 3R (reuse, recycle, reduce) sustainability philosophy.

The entire process was conducted in 4 phases according to client’s schedule of shifting. The total time for the entire process was an amazing 12 days with an average of 2-3 days per jib. The entire operation was completed successfully by December last year.

We believe in offering a short lead time to get customer’s operations running swiftly.

Slewing Jibs – Optimal Solutions for Spot Loading

Slewing jibs do not look impressive when compared with overhead cranes. At first glance, they seem limited in their applications. However, for users who fully understand the capability of these material handling equipment, they are indeed very productive when utilised correctly.

One of our key  customers discussed with our sales team their work process application. The slewing jib is designed to lift and put down materials for cutting purposes. Cutting is pretty fast using the latest technology. And the slewing jib is renowned for its intense “spot loading”. This simply means materials are hoisted and placed down very efficiently and safely, suggesting vast improvement in productivity.

One key feature of Rotomatik slewing jib is its footing. It is extremely small maximising floor space. The other salient feature is the Stahl chain hoist which is quite robust and reliable. The combination of both slewing jib technical design and superiority of Stahl hoist is Rotomatik’s value proposition to our customers.

Explosion-Proof Slewing Jibs for Rotary Engineering in Myanmar – The Story Continues

The four units of the explosion-proof slewing jibs are finally installed by personnel from our partner Rotary Engineering under the supervision of Rotomatik (S) Pte Ltd and/or Future Gift International in Feb 2020 with the skilled labour from Rotary Engineering

The entire logistics operation required a lot of coordination between the many parties including the authorities of Port of Thilawa from the moment the cargo is shipped from Rotomatik’s factory to the Thilawa Port, a river port 25km south of Yangon.

Upon reaching the port, gigantic barge cranes were used to offload and installed the slewing jib cranes on the jetty. Test loads were provided as part of the commissioning process.

The slewing jibs unique with three main features:

  • The jibs are designed for hazardous area Zone 1.
  • The jibs are designed to withstand high wind loads.
  • The jibs are designed for earthquakes.

Since the area is used for O&G activities, the hoists and all electrical equipment must be ex-proof designed.

Where the port is located, the area is subject to natural disasters such as cyclones, earthquakes and others.

Towering at 8.2m, such tall structures in open areas are subject to strong winds. Using past data, the slewing jibs are designed to withstand a wind loading of 54 m/s or 194 km/h.

Myanmar rests on one of the world’s two main earthquake belts, with one of its many fault lines running north to south placing Yangon and Port Thilawa at risk. Hence, the design of the slewing jibs take into the account an earthquake resistant design factor of 0.2g.

When one approaches the Port Thilawa, one cannot help but wonder at the four bright yellow structures against the Myanmar skyline, signalling the continuing development of Myanmar.

Rotomatik (S) Pte Ltd appreciates the close partnership with Rotary Engineering Pte Ltd and Future Gift International.

Myanma Railway Company Replaces its 100-year Cranes

Rail transport was introduced in Burma in 1877 by the British. Today, the rail transport in Myanmar which spans across the country has one of the largest rail network in ASEAN.

In order to keep up with the rail technological pace and the country’s rate of development, Myanma Railway Company, a state-owned railway firm, decided to replace its existing two units of Ransomes & Rapier Ltd cranes.

During the British rule, in 1912, these cranes were installed as part of the construction of the Carriage & Wagon Workshop, which is still located in Myit Nge City, Mandalay Division.

After over a century of service, the company decided it was time to retire the work horses as it was more economical to replace them with two units of designed-for-purpose Rotomatik 15-tonne double-girder cranes.

The latest cranes were installed and commissioned by Rotomatik (S) Pte Ltd’s Myanmese partner, Future Gift International. The two companies have fostered a strategic alliance since 2007.

The important role of the latest cranes cannot be overstated. They are used for building and assembling new coaches as well as reconditioning and upgrading older coaches through the weighty task of handling and lifting of bogie frames, carriages and wagons.

The company has decided to keep the old crane nameplate as a testimony of its development and historical legacy over the years.

Rotomatik (S) Pte Ltd wishes Myanma Railway Company and  Future Gift International continued success.

Explosion-proof Goods Hoist in O&G Industry

Goods Hoists

Goods hoists are a versatile transporting equipment in the manufacturing and logistics industries.

An Oil & Gas (O&G) multi-national company which manufactures petroleum products was in the process of constructing a new plant. After reviewing its internal logistics processes, the management realised it needed an internal material handling system to accelerate its materials movement to the Level 3 of its new plant.

Two important criteria were established with potential suppliers from the outset of the construction project. Goods are to be moved from ground level to level 3. The products are classified as dangerous goods.

Rotomatik Singapore presented their flagship explosion-proof goods hoists. The goods hoist is designed to carry 5 tonne of dangerous goods.

Rotomatik decided to supply a 10-tonne hoist for future expansion with a configuration of 4/2 meaning the cage can carry higher load and the cargo will be lifted up true vertically. However, overload sensors are in-built to restrict loads up to and including 5 tonnes.

Lifting of Goods Hoist Cage

The cage is made of stainless steel with all the standard safety features such as door sensor, interlocking mechanism, safety catches and many others redundant features which will offer a fail-safe system.

Construction schedule requires the goods hoist shaft to be built in tandem with the building structure. The challenge was in the installation process.

Part of the execution is the stainless steel cage has to be lifted over 40 metres by a mobile crane and carefully lowered into the goods hoist shaft, followed by the explosion proof hoist and all its explosion proof panels. A well-oiled operation indeed.

Every task was done by trained technicians and double checked by engineers and quality checked by our QC engineers.

The entire order-to-installation process began in 2018 and it was finally installed towards the end of 2019.
